The adidas SL 72 model was introduced to the market in 1972 as part of a new series of running shoes called "Super Light" (SL) and debuted during the Summer Olympics in 1972. It was designed as a lightweight running shoe to capitalize on the running boom of the 1970s. It was also the first adidas shoe to feature the trefoil logo, which helped establish the modern identity of the adidas brand.
