The adidas SL 72 model was originally released in 1972 as a lightweight running shoe during the running boom of the 70s. It debuted around the Summer Olympics in 1972. It was the first adidas shoe with the trefoil logo and was designed as a "Super Light" trainer ("SL" = Super Light, "72" = 1972), using a nylon upper and EVA foam in the midsole to offer a lighter alternative to existing adidas running models. The silhouette has been revived by adidas Originals as a retro "OG" from the archive, positioned as a lifestyle sneaker with a strong vintage/heritage appeal.
