Nike Air Max 90, originally named Air Max III, debuted in 1990 as Nike's third silhouette with a visible Air unit, designed by Tinker Hatfield, who drew inspiration from the Air Max 1 from 1987 and the Air Max Light from 1989, creating a sharper profile reminiscent of Italian sports cars. Hatfield introduced wide eyelets, rubber overlays, microfiber, a mesh upper, a padded tongue, and an enlarged visible Air unit for better design and visibility of Nike technology. The model debuted in the iconic Infrared colorway and has seen many retros, including a 30th-anniversary edition in 2020.
