New Balance 2002 was originally launched in 2010 as an exclusive, USA-made running shoe from the 1000 series, serving as a high-end successor to the 2001 model with N‑ERGY cushioning and a nubuck/mesh upper. Due to its very high price and limited popularity, the 2002 model was discontinued and became a niche collector's item. In 2020, New Balance refreshed the design as the 2002R, combining the 2002 upper with the 860v2/860 sole, lowering the retail price and transforming it into a lifestyle "retro runner" that gained popularity through general releases and collaborations.
